Unified Theories CD feat. Will Vinson, Gwilym Simcock, Orlando le Fleming, Ernesto Simpson & Brigitte Beraha *PREORDER*
Release date: Friday 27th June. Preorders will be posted immediately, so you’ll get the CD BEFORE release day!
Unified Theories is the ambitious new album. It is Ant’s sixth album as a leader, featuring ten new compositions (including one contrafact on a well known jazz standard) and it marks the start of a brand new lineup. Brigitte Beraha (voice) sings self-penned lyrics on three tracks. Joining them are Will Vinson (alto sax) & Orlando le Fleming (bass) both of whom have returned to Britain after decades at the forefront of the NYC scene. In the last few years Gwilym Simcock (piano) has toured extensively with Pat Metheny. Cuban Ernesto Simpson (drums) known for his work with Dizzy Gillespie, Michael Brecker (and many more), completes the instrumentation.
The title has a double meaning. The first refers to people in the world (or in this case, these six musicians) deciding on agreed, common ground as a starting point - a unified theory - rather than focusing on differences. Much of the music, however, evolved from musical experiments or theories such as: “What happens if we combine two tonal centres?” (Stereopticon), “What if a rhythmic cycle had the same shape as a Pacific island?” (Nikumaroro) or “What happens if we use this melodic palette but incorporate some wrong colours?” (Colours). This is the second meaning.
Album Track Listing: 1. A to Z; 2. Colours; 3. Parity; 4. Tbilisi; 5. Ballroom; 6. Nikumaroro; 7. Where Would We Be?; 8. Stereopticon; 9. Octopus Pyjama; 10. Ensconced; 11. Nikumaroro (alternate take).
